About
In the late 1980s, my sister was born with a large birthmark on the right side of her face and neck. Her birthmark didn’t hurt, or impair her at all, but it was highly visible. To avoid being ‘different’, my sister endured frightening and painful treatment, the ramifications of which still impact our lives today.
Now, I work at the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), a world-leading research centre focused on the role that appearance plays in people’s lives. My mission is to reduce the disadvantage and distress experienced by people who are visibly different and to ensure healthcare is psychologically informed.
I carry out high-quality, applied research in partnership with global charities, hospitals, and universities to make real-world change.
I hold a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Psychology and Mental Health (2005), two Masters degrees in Research Methods (2008) and Health Psychology (2009), and a DPhil in Psychology (2015).
I publish peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and professional reports, and present my research at national and international conferences and events. For a full list of my publications, visit: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Nicola-Stock.
